Tipping bucket reed switch along with using optical sensor

Australia has been in flood for last couple of years and I have a seep pipe drain that at times flows quiet well when it rain and for several days after the rain has stopped, I have been wanting to measure the amount of water and have made up a tipping bucket sensor with a reed switch that fires a led as the reed switch passes past the magnet, this led then fires the optical sensor normally used to read a meter, I have calibrated it to 312mL for every pulse count, at the moment it seems to be working ok

Why didn’t you use the reed switch directly?

I wanted to keep the tipping bucket isolated in it’s own circuit
