Superstatic 789 Initial Setup

I’ve recently sourced and installed a Superstatic 789 heat meter, I’ve got a pulse version rather than a MBUS version but I’m having some issues with relating the actual meter display to the installation manual.

As expected, out of the box the meter shows the word “DISABLED” because it hasn’t yet been put into service. The problem is that the sequence of menus don’t match the manual at all.

The manual says that with short pushes of the (only) button I should cycle through the below…
DISABLED → CONFIG → COLD.PIPE → 000000.01 MWh → 000000.01 m3

However, I get the below sequence of menus…
DISABLED → 00000000 kWh → sd 01.01 → 000000.00 m3 → COLD.PIPE

I was worried that the meter had already been setup but the fact that it’s showing the word “DISABLED” and isn’t’ incrementing power or volume, it doesn’t appear to be.

I’m wary of fumbling through the menus too much and/or making any long pushes of the button as I don’t know where in the (undocumented) menu structure, the settings will be made permanent and may not be correct.

Does anyone else have any experience with setting up a Superstatic 789 from scratch, especially anyone that’s done so with a pulse version.

Thanks.

Hello @dan235,
There’s a bit more info on the data sheet https://sontex.ch/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/data-sheet-superstatic-789.pdf.
From what I remember when I installed mine, you have to set up your Config settings before going into Normal mode (i.e. don’t do a long press on “Disabled” before you are happy with your settings).

Sarah,

Thanks for the additional document, it does indeed contain some information that I hadn’t seen before.

As I say, my meter is definitely “unsealed” because it shows disabled but when doing a long push of the button when the screen shows COLD.PIPE it jumps straight to ID rather than showing UnSEALED as per the document.

Do you or anyone else have any other ideas?

Thanks.

Your description suggests that someone has already run right through the setup process, and that you are in Normal mode already.
When you long press COLD.PIPE (till you see the ID), then short presses, does it run through the normal display cycle (T1, T2, DT, Flow, Duty etc)? If so, you are indeed in Normal mode.
This shouldn’t be a big problem, though you will have to put up with whatever units have been entered in Config mode.
Are you planning to monitor the output remotely? If so, what hardware were you going to connect? (At the mo I just write down the results on a bit of paper as I don’t understand the basics of data transfer… :face_with_diagonal_mouth:.)

I understand what you mean, doesn’t make much sense otherwise. The problem is that it says DISABLED and none of the totals (energy or volume) are increasing so it definitely hasn’t started any measurements yet.

I do indeed get the normal display cycle but the document you provided seems to suggest that this is normal and you need to enter the “config” mode from the service menu, with a long press of the button!

I’m connecting the pulse outputs to a Modbus I/O module, this gets read by a Raspberry Pi running HomeAssistant via Modbus/TCP.

I’m happy to try and help with getting the data if you’re looking to connect it up.

I’ve done a bit more digging and it looks as if the “config” menu is something which has to be requested at the time of order, not all meters have it.

It’s not ideal but I’ve just put the meter into service and will just have to work with the pulse weights as they are by default…

  1. Is it giving sensible results (at least on the display) now?
  2. Might be worth having a moan at Sontex/your supplier if you still aren’t happy.
