Powering controller board from battery pack

I was wondering if it would be possible to power the controller board from the pack voltage by adding power input pins, polarity protection diode, resettable fuse, and a DC-DC converter.

I tried powering the D1 mini from the 5V pin but wound up burning it. Not sure why as all connections were good when tested and the output of the voltage converter was well within spec.

Something like this may be suitable, its also DIN rail mounting so easy to fix to a wall/box.

18 to 75V DC input and 5V/3A output

Hi - someone told me galvanic isolation is necessary to use pack voltage. Can you confirm this ?

not necessary unless you need to reduce the noise on the comunication wires
