After we set up some virtual feeds the dashboard item disappeared from the menu.

I recently ran into something similar with another module. If you’ve recently installed or updated any part of emoncms, make sure you go to Administration and update the database.
If all else fails, you can reinstall from scratch (use an empty folder!). You shouldn’t lose any settings or data (at least that’s been my experience).
