Location of air source heat pump

Hi all,

I’m at the very early stages of considering whether I could install a heat pump and was hoping for some basic advice to decide whether it’s feasible or not.

I live in a two-bed ground-floor flat in a converted terraced house. We have a large flat roof which is an extension to the original house. The gas boiler is located in the extension where the flue can be seen in the photo. I’m wondering whether the ASHP could be located in the position marked in red, with a small hot water tank taking the place of the gas boiler. Does anyone see any problems with this idea? Would it be better to locate the ASHP in the back garden? There is underfloor heating throughout the ground floor. Would this work well with a heat pump? The manifold for UFH is located near the boiler in the extension.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Hi Alex,

So far as I know, as long as your installation complies with everything in Standards & Tools Library - MCS, in particular the Installation section, you’ll qualify for the BUS grant.

But if you put it where you plan, be aware that noise/vibration (and possibly cold air leaving the ASHP) may annoy your neighbour.

If in doubt, I suggest you ask a respected local installer for a professional opinion. (Emphasis on “respected” - there are loads of cowboys out there…)

I know of quite a few wall and roof mounted heat pumps which have not caused any noise issues. The unit will need a flat surface to sit on, or a wall mounted bracket

Roof or wall mounting is totally possible, but it will substantially increase the installation cost, since it’s a lot more labour. I wall mounted my heat pump, I’m very please with it, but it was a lot of extra work! Unless your roof has very easy access then ground mounting, if preferable, is you have a suitable location.
