Is there an official body which "polices" heat pump installations?

We recently had some double glazing fitted. A couple of weeks after receiving our FENSA certificate, we got an email asking whether we would be willing to let an assessor come and survey the installation to ensure that it complied with building regulations. As our result, our installers are having to come back for a couple of days to refit 5 windows. It seems like every double glazing installer has to undergo a handful of such inspections every year.
Does anyone know of a similar process for checking that heat pump installers are compliant?

Yes, MCS does this. But I don’t know how common site assessments are. I believe they are planning to do more site visits, particularly for installers who get more complaints as part of the new overhaul to MCS which is launching this year.

All MCS installers should have had at least one site visit when they first join the scheme.

My Dad had a heatpump installed last year, and it was audited by MCS who had a couple minor nitpicks for the installer to come back and fix.

OfGEM also conduct audits if the HP installation was partly funded by the BUS grant, it is mostly a fraud prevention exercise (did you really have a fossil fuel boiler beforehand etc) but covers some of the MCS technical installation stuff too

They audited ours as well - inspector checked all the paperwork etc. as well as the installation. The pipe insulation outside was typical cheapo insulation which was already beginning to fail through UV. So they had to come back and put proper insulation on.

One thing he did pick up on was that the pipes going through the wall weren’t in cladding - I had to send documents to them, so that the installers were off the hook. In our situation, it would have been next to impossible to clad the pipes through the wall. I sent diagrams of the wall makeup etc. and had to say I was quite happy with things as they were and that we’d agreed that this was the only solution.

I did wonder if you could trigger an MCS audit in some way?

Thanks for all your replies. I will forward them to my friends-of-a-friend who have had a lousy install.
