Grant Aerona3 ASHP - Best way to make it Smart?

Hi all,

Apologies if this isn’t the right place to post this. I have a friend in southern Scotland who’s recently had a new ASHP install. (It’s a Grant Aerona3 2x 10kW heatpumps. They have 2 heating zones plus Domestic Hot Water.)

Unfortunately, this was installed with the very basic Grant Aerona Remote Controller with two programmable thermostats. Controls wise it harks back to the 90s!

Grant also provide a Smart Heatpump System Controller which can run the 2 zones + DHW.

He’s looking to improve the setup and controls. - Any suggestions for this? What would you do?

A few observations:

  • The heatpumps themselves run on ModBus, so assume any replacement controller would connect in here.
  • Grant UK do offer a Smart Heatpump Controller with EcoNet24 web/app connectivity.
  • Homely has been recommended and looks to be a good alternative, with weather compensation and smart tariff integration. (Only limitation appears to be that it doesn’t access COP data from the ASHP.)

My only experience with the Grant Aerona3 R32 units is adding a homely, it seems to do a decent job of making the most of what are not the easiest units to control well.

Thanks.

Did you get an ASHP engineer to install your homely or did you do it yourself?

Out of interest do you have 1 or 2 heat pumps and does your house have 1 or 2 heating zones?
