Emonpi2 first boot its stuck on "starting.."

I purchased one of the emonhp packs from the Shop. Just got the heat pump installed and they have powered up the emonpi for the first time. Its been stuck on “starting…” for over an hour, the button doesn’t do anything.
We tried turning it off and back on again with no difference.
Its using the original power supply.

I’ve also got an original emonpi which I have plugged the SD card into and run fdsk and that also made no difference.

I have a spare SD card which is set up from the latest image and tried that and it didn’t seem to work either so am running out of things to try.

Do I need to send this back for a replacement or is there anything else I can try?

Hi Kevin,

If you contact the Shop team at [email protected] they’ll be able to advise whether there are further problem solving steps to try for your specific setup - or arrange a repair / replacement if that proves necessary.

To that I add, remote support for the Heatpump Monitor is included in the price.

They sent me a replacement and its worked straight away. Not sure what the issue was though.

In case anyone has any idea’s. I’ve blown a number of raspberry pi’s so far on this one (first couple were within a few hours of it being connected). I think its shorting the 3.3v line on the pi and killing it. I have an Modbus to USB for the axioma qalcosonic e4 heat monitor, a RS485 to USB for the SM120’s and a connection to the hot water / heating switch (switched live). All parts supplied as part of the heat pump kit. I found a snagged cable on the RS485 and unplugged that put in a new Pi which lasted 3-4 days and then the Pi died again.

Things I have noticed:

The ground on the valve may be different to the ground from the SM120’s as they are powered from the heat pump power connection.

I had the heat pump plugged into the mains (different circuit to the SM120’s) which may have a different ground to the SM120’s.

It may have been more than one issue as the snagged cable could certainly have been an issue which is why it was disconnected prior to putting in another good Pi. Was not expecting it to blow again.

Pi Red and Green lights are on, nothing on the HDMI, no change if SD card is in or out, known good or not.

Please let me know if you have any idea’s.

Did you solve this?

Hi,

I think so, 4 raspberry pi’s later. The installer had damaged the rs485 cables from the sdm120m which was shorting the connection and killing the pi. I don’t know if there was another issue but I swapped the wires for another pair that were still good and it’s been working since. I don’t think the pi handles unstable signals on the usb ports very well. Thanks to Glyn who tested all the parts I could send back multiple times as we were trying to diagnose the issue.
