Can I Use an Intel Core M vPro NUC or Laptop as a Dedicated OpenEnergyMonitor Node?

Hey all,

I’m planning to set up a dedicated OpenEnergyMonitor node for monitoring energy consumption in my home, and I’m considering using an Intel Core M vPro NUC or a similar laptop for the task.

I know OpenEnergyMonitor typically runs on low-power hardware like Raspberry Pi, but I’m curious if anyone has experience using an Intel Core M-based system for this purpose.

Specifically, I’m wondering:

  • Performance: Will the Intel Core M be overkill, or is it a good fit for continuous data collection and processing?
  • Power Efficiency: Will it consume too much power for something meant to run 24/7?
  • Compatibility: Any issues running OpenEnergyMonitor on these systems, or should it work without a hitch?

I would love to hear if anyone has tried this setup or has any advice!

Welcome, Arthur, to the OEM forum.

I suggest you don’t type your post outside this forum and then paste it in. This is typical of “spammer” behaviour and it’s why your post was quarantined and didn’t appear until I noticed and released it.

I’m afraid I don’t have the specialised knowledge to help with your specific questions, there is a script from which the SD Card download is made, but I’m almost certain it will need a degree of tweaking to get it to work. Others who can help should be along soon.

In the meantime, have you looked at the Docs section and in particular at emonSD — OpenEnergyMonitor 0.0.1 documentation and using the EmonCMS Install Scripts?

For what it’s worth, a friend of mine repurposed an old laptop for EmonCMS very simply. He installed Linux Mint, downloaded the Docker package for EmonCMS, and it works fine. Of course, it’s considerably more powerful than a RPi, but it was essentially free, and he can run other things on it as well. As far as energy consumption goes, I haven’t done any research on that, but it wouldn’t be hard to do. Arguably if the overhead allows better use of your HP, then it’s to some extent compensated for.

With the added bonus of a built-in UPS.
