Sorry to hear. This is what we’ve tried to achieve with the Level 3 Heat Pump Monitoring Bundle:
This is pre-configured all-in-one package for heat pump monitoring. Granted, it does have a number of options, but these are necessary to tailor it to the size of heat pump and user preferences. The bundle is often ordered by installers and installed as part of a heat pump installation. Retrofitting monitoring is possible, bit it can be challenging.
Please let us know if you have ideas how we can make it easier. Happy to discuss the option with you if you want to give us a call or email.
Would this not also require you to measure the electricity required? The idea of a cheaper/simpler entry is nice, but I guess DHW CoP alone isn’t that interesting as it’s a much simpler system than the full heating setup which encompasses so much more of the house’s fabric. The only thing it would really tell you is whether it meets the manufacturer’s claims? (n.b. not a heat pump expert yet, lots to learn!).
Personally I believe the industry has a wider modeling problem, it’s very obvious lots of boiler manufactures probably have very very basic modeling, if any at all. Homeowners have none, but you’d imagine a future where they do have a fairly good energy model of their house to help inform decisions and running costs!
It’s a challenge to make heat pumps the “normal” choice to heat your house. Ultimately we need to get to a position where selecting a heat pump is the obvious choice, across multiple segments. (Homeowners isn’t an obvious choice, developers it isn’t an obvious choice due to the risk, commercial it is an obvious choice and hence is widespread) my personal opinion and strategy with this is to just compare to a gas boiler for your own or a similar house, with a direct costs focus. I don’t think it’s pushing the boat out to say that tracking COP is a bit “strange” . The other awareness to have is changing to a “strange” heatpump will never be as attractive as “awe jeez it was hot last week, let’s buy Aircon and look you get heating as a bonus?!” It’s just a fundamental human logically framing thing going on.
I prefer we put our efforts into disseminating the message “awe jeez, why is it so hot? If we don’t stop burning fossil fuels right now, this will be the coolest summer we ever have”
