Samsun Gen 6 installation - issues raised during service

Hi,

I’m working through the issue risked by the engineer at the last service of my 12KWh Samsung Gen 6. The system is 2.5 years old and was installed int renew build house when I purchased it.

  1. He found some debris when cleaning the outside filter and he asked whether the system was flushed. I have no information on whether a flush happened post installation, so the recommendation is to a full flush.
  2. Related to the above, we don’t have a magnetic filter on our installation. He recommends that one is fitted.

Both of these seem like sensible recommendations, but I welcome your thoughts and observations.

How much debris, like a few black spots is fine right.

I am a big fan of IntaKlean HP Magnetic Heat Pump Filter and

I actually have both installed. I perfer a filter that has an actual screen and a big one, both these filters have massive screens. They don’t seem to effect flow rate that badly

My installer installed a Y strainer and a dirt separator. The Y strainer had to be cleaned regularly as the surface area is so small, and the dirt separator didn’t have a magnet in it either. I had a mix of new rads, 2nd hand rads (which I flushed as best I could with a hose pipe before fitting) and some old rads.

So I installed this one myself a few weeks ago: Altecnic Dirtmag Quattro Filter - 22mm | Plumbing Superstore®
With a bit of plumbing know how, it was easy to do myself, but I wouldn’t begrudge anyone not willing to DIY it. After fitting it, the amount of dirty water and debris that came out after the first week was incredible. Certainly improved the cleaning effectiveness. 10/10 would recommend.
I followed it up with some FloMasta Cleaner which I left in for a week, drained everything down, refilled, 2nd drain and refilled a 2nd time with inhibitor. The cleaner seemed to do a good job as the water that came out was black. A proper power flush might have done a better job, but trying to DIY everything is way.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to clean my filters, a task I usually do on a Sunday morning although we’ve had a couple of months of heating on/off and I haven’t done it at all!

Our system originally had a Magnaclean (I think) installed by BG.

When we changed to the heat pump our installers didn’t do the recommended flush but added both an in-line strainer and a Fernox TF1.

They all collect different stuff - the magnetic one least of all.

You clean the filters once a week! You definitely need to have your system cleaned.

The heating has been on for 2 months and I took the top of the filter and it was empty so I didn’t bother to clean it.

Thanks for your thoughts. I’ll definitely add a magnetic filter and get them to do a flush when they’re at it!
