I have just had my heat pump installed but not yet running. I have hot water only at the moment. The flow temperature is reading 24C and return 38C however the flow is hot to the touch and the return is cold, so it looks like the temperature sensors are wired incorrectly . Will I have to return the energy monitor, can I swap the sensor wiring or is there a software fix? PS. its a Sontex meter.
Many thanks

Hi Nigel,

There should be a sticker on the front of the heat meter which states which pipe the heat meter body should be fitted to. If the meter has been installed on the wrong pipe, I’m afraid this can’t be fixed in software. Please get in touch and quote your order number to discuss the options: hello@openenergymonitr.zendesk.com

Hi Glyn,
The printed instructions said to install it on the flow, but a label on the heat meter said return. We went with the printed instructions. I have now rewired the thermocouples so they give the correct readings. I haven’t tested the rate of flow yet as the Pi over heated and failed ( I have a box of spare Pies) hopeful all will be well next time the HP fires up.
Many thanks
Nigel

The installation instructions say to observe the sticker on the meter. But there is also a diagram which says ‘heat meter body on flow*’ (‘*unless stated otherwise’), this is because most (but not all) heat meters are fitted on the flow. To avoid confusion, we’ve now standardised on configuring all heat meters to be fitted on the flow. Apologies for the confusion.

Nice work swapping the sensors! I’ve had a look at the data from your system and it looks like the meters are reporting data correctly, but since the HP is not currently running it’s not yet possible to verify heat meter operation.

Have you considered submitting the system to https://heatpumpmonitor.org ?

Thanks Glyn,
I’ve just switched the hot water boost on to check things out, and all is good. Maybe interchangeable thermocouple connectors could be useful for people that may have a difficulty installing the heat meter in the flow, just a thought.
I will be submitting it to heatpumpmonitor.org once the setting up data has worked its way out (is there an easy way to delete old data?)
all the best
Nigel

Excellent.

Swapping over the probes will cause a slight error in the readings, since the heat meter uses the temperature reading of the sensor in the body of the meter for the internal flow rate measurement calculation. In your case, even though the probes are swapped, the heat meter will still be using the reading from the return probe as the expected entry temperature into the meter body.

Ideally, the meter software should be re-configured if the body of the meter is being installed on a different pipe. Although from our experience, this induced error does seem to be reasonably small.

In the setup for My Heatpump app you can provide a starting timestamp; data before this time will be ignored.

Thanks Tim, Just what I wanted.
