Expansion Tank installation question

Hi, I’ve just had my Samsung Gen 6 AHSP serviced and the engineer has pointed out a number of issues that I’d like you help to understand. The first is that the expansion tank for the heating has been mounted horizontally. His summary of why this an issue is:

This allows the internal bladder and air cushion to work properly and prevents water from pooling or air from migrating to the wrong end.
• If it’s horizontal on the floor, the bladder can’t expand evenly, the pre-charge may not behave as designed, and you could end up with waterlogging, poor expansion control, or premature failure.
• From a regulatory standpoint, G3 of the Building Regulations and the unvented hot water cylinder manufacturer’s instructions must be followed. Installing an expansion vessel contrary to those instructions would make the system non-compliant.
• Most BS EN 13831-certified expansion vessels specify orientation and require support brackets or wall mounts, not resting on the floor.

Looking the Zilmet documents for this model, he does seem to have a point! I’m speaking to him tomorrow to get his recommendations, but I just wanted to pick your brains about my options at this point ie do I have any other choice than to fix this if it is against building regs?

Thanks in advance!

The important thing is to install and operate any expansion vessel in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Some vessels are intended to be mounted horizontally but I agree with your assessment that this one (Zilmet code 1100001951, part of their ULTRA PRO range) is not; it should be vertical - based on https://www.intatec.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Ultrapro-V5.pdf

In my view, it would be sensible to either have it moved to be mounted vertically or replaced with a different vessel that’s intended to be horizontal.

It is at least screwed to the floor…

Thanks David - I suspected as much. The installation was signed off by Joule so it’s a bit concerning this was not picked up.
