I would like to know how to setup emonpi for remote access outside of my home network. I have setup port 80 for port forwarding - but I am still unable to access.
Do I need to setup the raspberry pi to allow remote access, and do I need to setup the emonpi for remote access?

Setting up a machine on a local network to be available from outside is possible but does open your network to some significant vulnerabilities unless you really know what you are doing.
I would suggest turning off the port forwarding (I presume you have done this on your ISPs router) and use Dataplicity’s wormhole feature.
It is free for one device https://www.dataplicity.com/subscriptions/plans/ and is extremely simple to setup.
