@stuart i never asked or read anywhere, but does the polarity matter for the serial connections between the controller and the modules? can they just connect to each other all willie nillie like?
Definitely NOT - the pins are straight through between the modules, pin 1 to pin 1, 2 to 2.
And bad things happen if you connect an RX to RX or TX to TX between modules
